Overcoming writer’s block is not easy, but getting your butt out of the office and into Mother Nature’s back yard can help.
I knew it! Mother Nature provides a healing tonic. Benefits of particular importance to me are reduced stress, reduced anxiety and depression, fewer symptoms of A.D.D., and increased energy. What writer doesn’t need help in those areas?
To overcome writer’s block or to simply escape from the urban madness, I often head to my local (Arlington County, Virginia) parks. My favorite is the Bon Air Rose Garden off Wilson Boulevard. Charming and calming at the same time, it is a respite from the noise and busy-ness of the city.
Although parts of the park skirt I-66 and the Metro rail, creating more noise than I want to hear on my nature walks, other parts are leafy green canopies and glorious color in the acres of rose gardens. Add a few boulders here and there and the usually fast-moving waters of Four Mile Run, and voila, after a brisk 45-minute walk with my old dog Hank, I’m a new person! Ready to write, I head back to the office a new person.
